<p>The month-long observation of Ramadan began earlier in July, when the thin crescent of the new moon was spotted. Fasting during Ramadan\u00a0is observed from dawn to sunset.<\/p>\n<p>Before dawn, observers begin the day with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekitchn.com\/the-food-of-ramadan-when-and-what-to-eat-94989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>suhoor<\/em><\/a>, the morning meal. Then there are the first prayers. Prayers continue throughout the day. After sunset, many break their fast with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/08\/23\/139671486\/a-month-of-fast-food-recipes-for-ramadan#139687666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dates<\/a>, as the prophet Muhammad did. Joyous worshippers put on new clothes and meet at mosques to offer their prayers.
